Computer Services/Library User Survey: 94 answer(s)

1. This survey is being conducted to determine where we can best = focus=20 our attention to provide the services necessary for the campus. = Your help=20 in this process is vital. Please answer these questions based on = your=20 experience during this current school year. Since these responses = are=20 anonymous, we will not be able to respond to issues raised here, = please=20 contact us at Ext. 4021 or http://helpdesk.cauc.ca for a response. = The=20 campus computer system and network has performed to my expectation = or=20 requirement.
Strongly agree 3D""=20 = 10 (10.64%)=20

2. If not, please provide reasons why you feel it has not. =
full response (id 94) Your lab computers are EXTREMELY = slow, and=20 there is no reason for having so many programs on each lab = computer.=20 Settings on computers are not fine tuned. Internet browsers come = up with=20 annoying pop-ups that have a "Do not show this message again" box, = but=20 even if we check it, everything is reset once we log off. The = linked=20 computers in the library are a joke. The system DOESN'T work. Stop = using=20 us as guinea pigs...if something doesn't work, take it out until = it does,=20 simple.
PAA kids don't use the lab computers for anything but = games, or=20 so is the justified stereotype, stop letting them make the labs a = noisy=20 place with no respect for CUC students.
full response (id 93) To slow of buffering for videos on = schoolwork.=20 Lots of problems with comps not working and h drives not working =
full response (id 89) the computers at the dorms do not = work=20 sometimes. they have frozen and completely lost information that = many=20 students, including myself, have worked hard on. i don't = appreciate the=20 fact that there are
full response (id 86) I still have problems with printing = from=20 Accpac...it occasionally refuses to print
full response (id 85) The service is so slow and useless i = didnt use=20 the internet most of the year. When i did rarely use it from time = to time=20 it was like going back to dial-up from hi speed. Also ever since = the=20 change with the modems in the halls the connections i the dorm = have been=20 slim to nonw.
full response (id 82) Internet slow and hardware, printers = not=20 working at times. Too often.
full response (id 78) There have been times when I know I = have made=20 important changes in documents and those changes are not there the = next=20 time I go into the document even though I know I have "saved" the = document=20 before closing it...these challenges seem to happen on a shared = drive. It=20 makes me wonder if some of my on-going documents are actually = completely=20 current now that I have confirmed that it is happening to others = besides=20 myself...I tend to second guess myself if I'm the only one having = a=20 problem!!

full response (id 41) The only problem I have is that the = printer=20 suddenly stops printing my reports and I have had to wait for 10 = to 20=20 minutes before it will start printing mine again. This needs to be = fixed.=20
full response (id 37) Still find internet a little slow. = Some=20 printer issues.
full response (id 35) It never works when I want it to. It = often=20 logs me offline if I leave my room even for a short time, or it = freezes,=20 or it works to slow to do much. I have had it time out while in = the middle=20 of D2L quizzes as well, which is not fun. The printers never = install=20 correctly either, only the one in the add building. I have alot of = trouble=20 with it.
full response (id 33) the net work is way to slow and my = id number=20 is at this time not registered so I can not access any online = services=20 from off campus
full response (id 32) i cant even watch the news for my = class=20 because it is forbidden.
full response (id 30) Many times the server is slow, as = well as the=20 internet connections.
full response (id 23) The computers in the science = building and=20 lakeview hall are extremely slow and need to be updated. As well, = piecing=20 3 monitors to one computer in Lakeview does not work, as they all = fail at=20 the same time if there is a problem.

full response (id 15) half the time it doesn't work and = the other=20 half it's really really slow
full response (id 13) sometimes the computers in the = science lab do=20 not let me on the network. this seems to very between computers =
full response (id 11) Most of the time it is fabulous. = Sometimes it=20 has frozen. The one thing Colin helped me be able to do some time = ago was=20 go on the Adventist singles site called = "ChristianSinglesDating.com" out=20 of Kansas with Nannette and Larry Thacker. You worked it so I = could go on=20 their Java Chat but a month or so later it stopped working = again???
full response (id 10) There is a consistent problem with = the network=20 being very slow, especially in the evening. The new website is = also very=20 slow if you're not using a campus computer.
full response (id 8) It only works some of the time and a = lot of=20 times it's extremely slow.
full response (id 7) agree the majority of the time. =
full response (id 6) I am surprised at how little memory = I have to=20 work with. I have to constantly delete files or 'save to CD' files = that I=20 hope I won't need anytime soon. I have 4 times the memory on a = personally=20 owned thumb drive. However I have recently been advised that there = are=20 'portable' plug-in added memory things that I will have to look = into.=20

full response (id 93) My h drive dissapeared and i lost a = bunch of=20 huge projects
full response (id 92) When our servre goes down. =
full response (id 91) the service can be very slow at = certain times,=20 and sometimes there tends to be a glitch that affects the=20 programs/software on several personal computers. also when it = comes to=20 changing a password the process is difficult because for some = reason there=20 is no warning and the outcome tends to be that the student cannot = enter=20 into their account on a personal or school machine.
full response (id 90) Internet leaves something to be = desired .=20 Sometimes really slow, or doesn't work at all when I need it most = . Some=20 websites can't even function properly because of it . Sometimes=20 frustrating ...
full response (id 89) Taken time to redo lost work due to = frozen=20 computer and the fact that computer would not save onto usb or h = drive. I=20 had to buy 2 new usbs in order to rely on school computers. the = whole=20 "compatibility mode" slows down and sometimes completely freezes = computer,=20 making it impossible to save my work.

full response (id 77) Grading online has been difficult = because=20 there have been many times the system is slow or seems unable to = handle=20 the demands of online grading--page freezes, grading input lost, = saving=20 material dos not always work.
full response (id 76) I have not found myself to be in = difficult=20 situations.
full response (id 75) Internet gets frozen frequently and = is usually=20 very slow, maybe because I'm at the very end of the dorm and often = loses=20 connection.
full response (id 74) someimtes it is down when needed the = most but=20 appreciate that it is usually announced ahead of time
full response (id 70) Not being able to use the "I" = spftware to gain=20 access to documents when off campus.
full response (id 69) not enough computers that are = reliable in the=20 sci centre
full response (id 67) No comments.
full response (id 66) Blocking of Web Sites and inability = to share=20 files with another person.
full response (id 63) sometimes it takes really long for = the=20 internet to load, and doesn't load at all.
full response (id 58) I have not had speed issues, but it = does seem=20 that the internet at CUC 'goes down' more than I have experienced=20 elsewhere in the past.
full response (id 57) None
full response (id 55) size of the mail-box is too small on = Groupwise=20
full response (id 53) Occasionally the internet will = become very=20 slow. Maybe because a lot of people are using the network at once? =
full response (id 51) Congenital problems with my 'new' = laptop!=20
full response (id 50) I lose wireless connection a few = times a day (=20 PAA )
full response (id 48) Network speed
full response (id 47) It's a bit slow sometimes, but maybe = it is=20 because a lot of people are on it at the same time.
full response (id 46) Network is occasionally down or = service is=20 interupted while projects are in process.

Internet is often = down.=20
full response (id 45) School internet can be VERY slow at = times and=20 is quite frustrating with time limits to my schedule and the need = for=20 speed.
full response (id 44) Slow when opening up and slow in = downloading=20 information, at times.
full response (id 43) It lagged, froze, then signed me = out.
full response (id 42) It can be frustrating when I cannot = get access=20 to the web, or the drives I need to complete my work.
full response (id 37) Ports blocked and unable to be = unblocked in=20 time for a class presentation.

full response (id 32) i cant even to updates on my mac = because the=20 internet is so slow
full response (id 31) Internet is down quite a bit. =
full response (id 30) When the server went down while I = was at work.=20 I couldn't get anything accomplished until it was working again. =
full response (id 29)

=

<= BR>

Understandably,=20 we cannot always receive "immediate" service which is often needed = in our=20 department because we serve the public for a short period of time = and=20 generate lots of paper work when the computer(s) break down at = this busy=20 time - which often seems to be the case. It would be nice if you = had more=20 staff, but the current staff do an excellent job considering their = staffing!

full response (id 28) The network being too busy or just = being down.=20 It's hard to do your work when this happens.
full response (id 27) Ocasionaly the internet is down for = an=20 afternoon. Its inconvinient but understandable.
full response (id 26) Software conflicts
full response (id 25) Some things are blocked, things that = seem=20 legitamate
full response (id 23) If we are paying for the School = Wireless=20 Network out of our account, we should be able to have the freedom = of the=20 internet with that service and not have any sites blocked. As = well, the=20 service should be at its full capacity, rather than having certain = floors=20 with poor connections (as the connection is stronger towards the = hallway=20 than farther into the room). The signal should be constant = throughout the=20 campus. If this was a professionally run service, let say in = Edmonton or=20 Calgary, Computer Services would fail in no time. However, we are = stuck=20 with it, according to the 'campus regulation monopoly.
full response (id 20) When the network is unavailable due = to server=20 issues on the weekend. Also, there were not enough personeel to = help witht=20 eh D2L program last fall. The sudden CUC website change in = December made=20 it difficult for both faculty and studnets to locate forms and = academic=20 programs.
full response (id 19) The internet on campus is extemely = slow=20 compared to the public library or other public access sites, = including=20 other universities I have visited. It doesn't matter if I am on my = laptop=20 connected to the wireless network or logged in at one of the = computer labs=20 or on the computer in my office here on campus. Sometimes its slow = enough=20 to be nearly remenicent of dial-up days.
full response (id 18) Most of the work that I need to do = is=20 connected with network service and internet service. If it has = issues, my=20 work backs up. There were a few days when my computer would not = respond=20 properly, a new computer has helped.
full response (id 17) Not being able to read some formats = of=20 illustrations. But Colin has solved it when absolutely necessary. =
full response (id 16) Computer services helped me with my = account=20 but it was the library who kept putting blocks on my account each = year so=20 I could not order outside of the cuc or hold books. In the last = year (year=20 3) a book was lost and I was supposed to be billed for it. = Instead, I was=20 blocked. Notice, I was blocked from these services since year one. = When I=20 went to inquire about it I was informed they had taken care of the = problem=20 when it was not. It was very inconvient for me to go back and = forth to the=20 libray to get things fixed and they weren't being addressed. =
full response (id 13) the random times when the network is = down are=20 very difficult to work around.
full response (id 12) the internet was constantly not = working, i=20 constantly (ALL THE TIME) got a screen saying to download "safety = connect"=20 or something. the wireless signal was ALWAYS weak at the end of = the hall=20 (upper floor, maple hall) simply connecting to the internet was an = extreme=20 hassle about 20% of the time...
full response (id 11) Having to move to different = computers a few=20 times because certain ones just would not even let me log in. =
full response (id 9) Just that I have to change my = internet=20 settings every time I want to connect. It is kind of a pain doing = it every=20 time I get to school and then again when I get home.
full response (id 8) Could not get the network internet = to work.=20
full response (id 7) The CUC webpage never loads = properly, and=20 sometimes other pages too. But this one is the one that frustrated = me the=20 most.
full response (id 6) I had some sign in issues that were = fairly=20 regular awhile ago - but things seem to be better lately. =
full response (id 5) Opening documents is very slow. They = sit and=20 think and think before they let me do anything in them. I am not = in=20 compatability mode.
full response (id 4) Slow logon time to computer. Usually = 6-8=20 minutes to boot up.
full response (id 3) Having to work on an older computer. = Having=20 internet access randomly crashing.
7. What is the one thing that you believe is within the = feasibility of=20 Computer Services that could be done to most enhance your = computing=20 experience at CUC?
full response (id 94) Get rid of the forbidden sites. =
full response (id 91) invest in new connection devices. = educate the=20 faculty and staff on computer literacy.
full response (id 90) Fix the internet, so that it works=20 consistently .
full response (id 89) faster desktop school computers. =
full response (id 86) Fix the printing problem
full response (id 85) Get over to the dorm and switch back = to the=20 old system. Aside from that any changes would be financially huge. = Not=20 that it should make that much of a difference.
full response (id 82) May not be feasible, but is there = something=20 better than Novel?
full response (id 81) Increase the internet speed. It is = so slow.=20
full response (id 80) stronger wireless feed, not all = areas in dorm=20 allow laptop to sign. censore youtube.
full response (id 78) I wonder if we need more space on = our=20 servers...or more servers that have fewer departments sharing = space...or=20 maybe it is time to totally upgrade again in this ever changing = technical=20 world!!
full response (id 77) Improve internet speed?
full response (id 76) Please consider providing a laptop = (or used=20 laptop) for teachers after they retire.
full response (id 74) speed up the system
full response (id 69) more reliable/faster internet =
full response (id 67) No comments
full response (id 66) Hardwire the dorm rooms so that we = could have=20 full network possibilites.
full response (id 63) update the system
full response (id 58) Computer services has to revisit its = internet=20 blocking policies. I hear from students that there are numerous = ways that=20 they can and do circumvent these safeguards. At the same time, = they are a=20 nagging inconvenience to those of us who use the internet for=20 informational purposes.
full response (id 57) Making sure that all computer labs = are checked=20 regularly.
full response (id 55) size of the mail-box is too small on = Groupwise=20
full response (id 51) Often, my only time to access = assistance is=20 during "lunchhour." Would it be possible to for CS to take lunch = at a=20 different time to accommodate those who are obligated to be in = class?=20
full response (id 50) well.....if you hadn't added within = the=20 feasibility part.....I would say buy lots of new stuff!! ( just = kidding )=20
full response (id 48) Increase network speed
full response (id 46) more reliability with regard to = network and=20 internet access. Fix whatever the problems are that cause students = to lose=20 documents.
full response (id 45) Fix the computers in Lakeviewhall = (at least on=20 guys side, I don't know how girl's side is functioning), and let = each=20 desktop to its own computer station and not sharing. People's = documents=20 when working are exposed to everyone sharing the same computer = station.=20 Who knows what confidential info they may have on there.
Fix = the=20 wireless connection problem, many times the router may be right = under my=20 head by the connection is terribly low..
full response (id 44) Speed up the process of opening = system for use=20 in the mornings when computer has been shut off for the = night/weekend.=20
full response (id 43) I don't know- so keep up the good=20 work!
full response (id 42) Awareness of the programs and how to = navigate=20 to ensure connections are correct.
full response (id 41) Fix my printing problem
full response (id 37) Increase bandwidth.
full response (id 36) Unblock megavideo
full response (id 35) make it faster and decrease the = security a=20 little.
full response (id 34) Not have to download the software = everytime i=20 try and log on
full response (id 32) less restictive
full response (id 30) I'm not sure.
full response (id 29) I would like to understand BASIC=20 Troubleshooting which would decrease my need to call computer = services as=20 often. When we have an ongoing, recurring problem that is simply = fixed,=20 please share with us how we can contribute to the solution. This = has been=20 done in a limited way in the past and I really have appreciated = knowing=20 what to do so I did not have to always call compter services. =
full response (id 28) more reasonable help and upgrades =
full response (id 27) I doubt if its feasible but I think = hiring=20 more staff would be benificial to the campus. Our current computer = staff=20 is great(really great) but they do so much work and have such high = demandes expected of them. They can't even leave for a short lunch = hour=20 without coming back to a long line of people expecting quick = results.=20
full response (id 26) So I guess cloning Colin is out = then? Thats=20 all I have...........
full response (id 24) I'm happy.
full response (id 23) Develop a new wireless system that = is strong=20 enough all throughout campus and that other wireless devices could = be run.=20 We shouldn't have to "not use" a wireless printer if we have one = just=20 because of the weak wireless network.
However, if that cannot = be=20 achieved, 4th floor NEEDS a wireless router.
full response (id 20) Orgnaize a D2L workshop during the = Faculty=20 Colloquium. Make a link between the CUC website and the Loma Linda = graduate program on campus.
full response (id 19) I think the whole network needs an = overhaul=20 with better connectivity and faster internet. In some buildings it = is=20 still difficult to get a signal that is strong enough to stay = connected=20 and the speeds are terrible.
full response (id 18) I am happy with Computer Services, I = know that=20 they have a ton of things to do... I feel that they have worked = hard to=20 help me.
full response (id 17) Access to files & hard drives = from home.=20
full response (id 16) Computer services were prompt in = making my=20 account work when it did not.
full response (id 14) Generally I don't view wireless = network as=20 safe, so if there could be areas to connect to the net through = plugging=20 in, that would be good.
full response (id 13) get better chairs for the science = computer=20 lab! they are all broken
full response (id 12) stop all the pop up screens on the = computer=20 lab computers. it's annoying to log in and have to wait 5 minutes = before=20 the computer is usable
full response (id 11) If I could go on chat with my prayer = group on=20 the ChristianSinglesDating.com Adventist site again, I would be = extremely=20 happy!
full response (id 9) I don't know what feasability = means...
full response (id 8) The easability of which setting up = the=20 internet access could be improved.
full response (id 6) Advise what portable type of added = memory=20 system could be added to rectify my small memory frustrations. =
full response (id 5) A wireless mouse would be nice. =
full response (id 3) Prevent the occasional shutting down = of the=20 server.
full response (id 2) Have the computer lab open a little = longer on=20 Fridays when sunset is later.
8. Please add any other comments (pro or con) that you think = Computer=20 Services needs to hear. Please understand that this survey is = anonymous,=20 so if you have written something that you would like a response = to, we=20 can't follow up from this survey. If you would like a response or=20 explanation on an item, please contact Computer Services at Ext = 4021 or=20 http://helpdesk.cauc.ca/, or include your name in your comments = here.=20
full response (id 91) The internet is obviously much = appreciated, as=20 well as the hard work of those who try to maintain it everyday. =
full response (id 89) dana and the rest of the staff are = phenomenal=20 and compensate for the slow computers.
full response (id 85) Pretty much said it all
full response (id 82) I appreciate the personnel and they = extreme=20 desire to help and they are always under the gun, but are so = helpful.=20 Occasionally though, seem to not believe what you tell them is = happeining=20
full response (id 81) I think the computer services staff = are=20 excellent!
full response (id 78) I really appreciate everything = Computer=20 Services does to help us accomplish our work...thank you. =
full response (id 77) I do believe that computer services = is doing=20 the best it can with the resources it has. Keep up the good work! =
full response (id 67) No comments.

full response (id 20) I hope Computer Services can be = moved to a new=20 location within the Library Learning Centre when it is designed = and=20 constructed. I do not think their faciltiy is either large enough = or well=20 designed to meet their needs.
full response (id 18) Keep up the good work. Workshops on = the=20 different tools/applications on the network are useful, especially = for new=20 personnel.
full response (id 12) wireless sucks
full response (id 11) I was surprised that eating and = drinking is=20 now allowed in the computer rooms. I agree that college students, = at=20 least, should be careful enough not to damage anything with food = or=20 drinks.
