How to publish web pages on the Internet

Faculty now have the capability to publish web pages on the internet. You can use these to keep your students informed of class requirements, make documents available for downloading (course outlines, assignments etc.) and let the world know about your latest research.

To publish documents on the Internet,

  • Create a folder in your H: drive called  PUBLIC_HTML
  • Save your Home Page (the document that will automatically open when people browse to your web site) calling it INDEX.HTML
  • To view your site, point your Internet browser to  www.cauc.ca/~jdoe  where jdoe is your Login Name (the name you used to LOGIN to the network). This is also the URL you should tell people to use to access your site.

If you wish to have a link to your site posted on the main CUC web site faculty list, please contact us.

You may create additional folders within the PUBLIC_HTML folder to help organize your web site.

To create web pages, use the software of your choice, but under our current Microsoft Campus Agreement, Front Page is our institutionally supported program.  If you don't have it already installed, click here to learn how.

If you have questions or problems setting-up this feature, please contact us.

Colour Printer & Photocopiers

HP 5500HDN

Computer services has purchased an HP 5500HDN colour laser printer for use by all campus entities served by Computer Services. If you want to print documents containing colour highlights, or signs for posting.  New with this printer is the addition of duplex printing,  11x17 paper handling capabilities, and faster printing.

Location:  The printer is currently located in the Computer Services Office next to the Faculty Superstation

Installation: The printer may already be installed on your computer.  When you go to print, just select the HP 5500Colour.Computer Services printer. If it does not show up, just run the printer policy from your Novell Desktop Management window. If that does not bring the printer up contact Computer services.  Once you have run the policy there is some initial  setup that is required using Printer Properties Pro.

If you are having problems doing this initial setup contact Computer Services and we would be happy to help you.

Charges: While the initial cost of the printer is being covered by Computer Services, we will need to charge for its use cover operating and maintenance costs. Therefore, beside the printer there is a sheet for you to record your usage, with the department to charge it to. We will process the charges at the end of the month. For college use, the charge (somewhat subsidized by Computer Services) is $0.10 per page (10 cents/page). If you wish to use the printer for personal use, a charge of $0.50/page (50 cents/page) will apply. Please pay any Computer Services staff directly for personal use, and record usage on the sheet also (we want to keep track of usage to better determine actual cost, and will adjust charges in the future if necessary).

Printers and Photocopiers

To select a printer or photocopier to print to, you first must install the iPrint client. Just CLICK HERE to install the client, or browse to the iPrint page on our web site as below, and click on the Install iPrint Client link, as shown in the second screen shot below.

When the File Download box opens, click the OPEN button, and then accept all the default options, and restart your computer after it is installed. Once the client is installed, return to the same iPrint page, and click on the building the printer or photocopier is in.  Then click on the Install link to the right of the printer/photocopier you wish to install. This will walk you through the install process.  Once completed, the printer should show in your Printer and Faxes box (Click START, then Printers & Faxes).

Before you can print to the photocopier, you must enter your department code.  To do this, open the Printer & Faxes (Click START, then Printers & Faxes), box, and right click on the photocopier you wish to print to.  Select Properties, as shown below.

This will bring up a new box as shown below.  select the Printing Preferences button, which opens the box on the right.  enter your 5 digit (ending with a zero) code in the Dept. Code box, and click OK in each box to save the setting.

This code should now be saved for future use.  You may also select any other features from this box to set duplexing, sorting, stapling etc.

Access from off Campus

There are several methods available for accessing network and computer resources from off campus, provided that you have an Internet connection available (dial-up, DSL, Cable etc.).  These include:

Web Access to Groupwise e-mail.  This will allow you full access to your mail, calendar, task list etc. using a web interface in place of the regular GroupWise Client.  You can also access your GroupWise account data and synchronize it with a mobile device. This can be set up at HTTP://gwmobile.cauc.ca

NetStorage is a service that will allow network directories from a browse interface without having the full Novell Client installed. If you access this service computer connected to out campus network, you will have access to your H: drive (Home Directory) and any other mapped drives, such as the I: drive where teaches shared files are available. If you access the service from off-campus, only the H: drive will be accessible.

iFolder : iFolder will allow you secure encrypted access to the files that you have placed in the iFolder.  You may either install the iFolder client on your home computer to give fastest access and also provide backup protection, or use the web interface to get access to the iFolder from any Internet enabled computer.

VPN:  For those who travel a lot or need access to their H: drive files, the VPN connection will enable you to work from off-campus just like you were logged in to our network in your office.  This is ideal for high-speed Internet connections, but still does work over dial-up lines if you are patient.  To enable this feature, you will need to have Computer Services install the necessary software and train you on its use.  Contact us to have this done.

Free PDF Creator

An application icon has been added to the Installations folder in your Novell Delivered Applications window on any college owned computer.  Clicking on the PDF Creator icon in there will install the printer and utilities needed to make this work.  Once installed,  there will be a new printer called PDFWriter installed, and to create a PDF file, just print from any program to this printer.  A box asking you to input the name of the file to save will open.  Give the file a name ending with the .PDF extension, remembering where you saved it.  You must save it on a local drive, not a network drive.  The PDF file will then be created, and can be opened with Acrobat Reader (also available in the Installations folder in your Novell Delivered Applications window)
